Corona Extra: Most Underrated Lager on the PerfectDraft?

Few beers divide opinion quite like Corona Extra. For some, it’s too light, too simple, too familiar. For others, it’s the very definition of an easy-going, sun-soaked lager. Served ice-cold from the Philips PerfectDraft Black; however, Corona has a way of reminding you exactly why it has endured for over a century.

The PerfectDraft system uses 6-litre kegs, and Corona Extra arrives at a session-friendly 4.5% ABV. Once loaded, the machine chills the keg down to a bracing 3°C, creating the sort of pub-perfect temperature that’s hard to replicate any other way at home. On a warm day, that alone feels like a small luxury.

In the glass, Corona looks exactly as it should: pale gold, crystal clear, and fizzing with fine carbonation. The pour produces a neat, two-finger head, though it does settle fairly quickly — something Corona has always been known for. That said, there’s still attractive lacing left behind, and visually it remains a very appealing pint.

Aromatically, this is a light and understated lager. There’s nothing demanding or complex here — and that’s the point. Corona doesn’t ask you to analyse it; it asks you to drink it. The focus is on refreshment, not introspection.

On the palate, served at 3°C, Corona Extra is clean, crisp, and effortlessly drinkable. It doesn’t have the weight or texture of stronger, malt-forward lagers, nor does it pretend to. Instead, it delivers smoothness, balance, and a refreshing finish that makes it dangerously easy to go back for another sip. This is a beer built for social occasions — the kind of lager that works just as well at a barbecue as it does poured quietly at home.

If there is a criticism, it’s the same one often levelled at Corona in pubs: the head doesn’t linger. But that feels like a minor quibble when the beer itself performs so well in every other respect. Carbonation remains lively, the temperature holds beautifully, and the flavour stays consistent from first sip to last.

At the time of tasting, Corona was also marking its 100th anniversary on PerfectDraft, with bundle deals featuring Corona Extra or the lighter Corona Ligera, along with branded glassware. With keg prices working out in the mid-£20 range, it represents excellent value for a draught-quality experience at home.

Ultimately, Corona Extra on the Philips PerfectDraft is a reminder that not every great beer needs to be bold or complex. Sometimes, the best beers are the ones that simply do their job perfectly. Cold, refreshing, and universally enjoyable, this is a modern classic that still knows exactly what it’s for. Add a wedge of lime if you like — or don’t — either way, it’s happy days in a glass.
